White Pelicans on the South Saskatchewan River
Evidence of a 6000-year-old Plains Indian culture has been unearthed at Wanuskewin National Historic Site on the South Saskatchewan River. After a day of cultural activities and learning of the bison-centered life in an ancient Indian encampment, you'll spend the night in a tepee at Wanuskewin. Next, you'll paddle the Kisiskachiwun - ancient Cree name for the nearby "swiftly flowing" river. Metis history comes to life as we hike from the river to the Fish Creek battlefield and camp at Petite Ville archaeological site - a Metis wintering village during the bison hunting off-season. The 2-day river trip winds up with a visit to Batoche, a National Historic Site and scene of the 1885 battle between the Metis and the Canadian militia.
