Camping at a First-Class Wilderness Hotel By Ines Pietrock |
Most German travellers have a penchant for experiencing remote and primitive places. Ines Pietrock was likely thinking along those lines when she signed up her family for the CanoeSki Loon Magic Canoe Tour in July 2008.
The tour took her and her partner and 15-year old daughter into the pristine wilderness of Prince Albert National Park, where they not only had a first-hand experience with nature and wildlife, but discovered that primitive living can also have elements of a 5-star hotel. Here are her memories of their adventures.

Although we had been paddling in Europe for the past 20 years, being new to Saskatchewan, we thought it might be a good idea for our family - my partner Michael our daughter Charlotte and me - to take a guided tour first before continuing canoeing here ourselves. Our German friends recommended going with Cliff because “he is a nice guy, an experienced outdoor specialist, and his tours are just terrific!” So it happened that we signed up with Cliff and his CanoeSki company for a wilderness canoe trip to Prince Albert National Park, in early July 2008. Even though the weather wasn’t favourable, we enjoyed every single minute of this 2-day trip called Loon Magic. After our arrival at the lake, Cliff introduced us to the various paddling strokes for those people who had not canoed before. (Those who were still uneasy about their skills got extra paddling tips throughout the trip). We loaded our packs into the canoes and off we went. After spending about two hours on the lake, we set up our tents on a nice spot overlooking the lake and took a lunch break. Later in the afternoon, Cliff and his assistant guide Cam, led us on a canoeing jaunt which took us to a beautiful meandering creek. We had a great time there, enjoying the scenery, listening to the haunting song of the loons, and following Cam’s stories about wildlife, nature, and culture. Back at the campsite, Cliff provided us with a delicious meal again. While others stayed up, we went to bed to get some rest. Next morning, Cliff welcomed us with hot coffee, tea, fresh fruits and yogurt, hot cereals, and toasted bagels. We felt like we were having breakfast in a first-class hotel and it was a mystery where Cliff got all this outstanding food right in the middle of the wilderness! Fortified by the hearty breakfast we set off on our next canoe tour which took us into another lake. Again, we enjoyed the great scenery and wildlife, and I paddled in the stern of Cliff's boat to get some extra canoe lessons. Later that day, we picked up our gear from the campsite, canoed back to the van and drove home to Saskatoon. Overall, it was a lovely trip. We truly enjoyed Cliff and Cam's guidance, their stories about nature and local history, incredible food, first-class outdoor equipment... If you are looking for a rewarding outdoor experience, Cliff's CanoeSki Discovery Co. is definitely the one to contact! CanoeSki Loon Magic Canoe Tour Photos July 2008 by Ines and Gunnar
